What is best – a Mould of the teeth or a Digital Scan?

When deciding on whether to commit to a course of treatment during your initial Consultation with the Orthodontist it is likely that a step in the process will be the creation of 3D moulds of your teeth. These are part of the initial patient records (in addition to Photos and X-rays) which are utilised in the preparation and planning of your care.
Traditionally, impressions were taken utilising an Alginate based product. This is mixed and loaded into an special tray and inserted into the mouth for a few minutes while it sets to a rubbery texture prior to removal. The impression is later poured with a plaster material to produce a set of stone models on which your Doctor can create your appliance.
While still an effective way to treat, this Alginate impression can be the least palatable part of the Orthodontic journey. Patients may feel like it is messy and quite a mouthful, particularly if they have a sensitive gag reflex!
Thankfully, in what is perhaps one of the biggest revolutions in patient care Orthodontists may now instead offer Digital Scanning technology in which a “wand” containing small cameras is passed over the upper and lower teeth. In just a few minutes, a very detailed 3D image is created. Tooth movement can then be planned digitally so that your Doctor is able to realistically demonstrate predictable outcomes. 3D models are then printed and extremely accurate, bespoke appliances such as aligners are created for each individual patient’s treatment.
